A fully-scored duet for cello and storyteller, a melding of music and literary fiction
NOTES
The work was adapted from Varon’s fictional short story “Interview,” about a 92-year World War II veteran and the teenager who comes to videotape him for a him for a school history project. Jeanrenaud, Varon, and their collaborator/director, David Ford, spent eight months creating the project. Jeanrenaud’s score grows out of her experience on the forefront of contemporary classical music, drawing a full range of expressive possibilities from her instrument.

Joan Jeanrenaud is a cellist, composer, arranger, and improviser. She was the cellist of Kronos Quartet for 20 years. With Kronos her work included more than 30 recordings and over 2000 performances that took her to virtually every major concert hall worldwide. During those years the group became, in the words of The New York Times critic John Rockwell, "the world's best known, most innovative contemporary-music quartet." NOTES
Lauded throughout the experimental and avant-garde world for her "incredible cello technique" (Annie Gosfield) and as "the queen of all us cellists" (Wendy Sutter), in her previous solo album Metamorphosis, and as a member of Kronos Quartet for over 20 years, Jeanrenaud staked her claim as a virtuoso cellist and interpreter of other composer's works. Now, with Strange Toys, she is the sole composer of all the music.

Is it pop? Is it classical? This collection of ten tunes is a collaboration between the amazing cellist composer and the hip beat artist Muñoz that features electronic and acoustic cellos along with beats and percussion for a fun ride!
NOTES
Pop-Pop, the collaborative new album from cellist extraordinaire Joan Jeanrenaud and art-funk percussionist/beatmaker PC Muñoz, is an exilharating mash-up of contemporary classical/new music sensibilities and future-funk/hip-hop sonic aesthetics. Jeanrenaud's polyrhythmic compositions, rendered on both acoustic and electric celli, are paired with skittering electro-funk beats, eruptive drumkit, cajon drums, Hua Pan Gu (traditional Chinese drum), and other percussive elements, making for a refreshing, culturally diverse 21st century sound.

Tune for 2 cellos
NOTES
'Oulipo' is a two cello version of a piece I originally wrote for the multi-media production 'Your Body is Not a Shark', a collaboration with choreographer Cid Pearlman and poet Denise Leto. The evening long piece premiered in January 2013, the music being scored for solo cello (me), four violins, two violas, two cellos, one bass and percussion (William Winant).
One of Denise's poems was titled 'Oulipo' which took its name from the group "Ouvroir de …
